Spending the night in a tent is anything other than a cakewalk in Greenland. First of all, you’ve got to watch out for polar bears on the prowl. Then, there are the sudden downpours and blizzards. One of those storms is what ended up driving us away from our great spot: tents, snow and rain are three things that just don’t mix! So we just had to accept that. Nonetheless, these were our best snowboarding days. For the last 10 years I’ve been traveling around the world in search of the perfect mountain with the perfect snow. Unfortunately, the quick pace of life in our society doesn’t allow me to stay at any given place as long as I’d like to. In order to really experience Greenland’s beauty and wonder of nature, 3 weeks just aren’t enough. And if your plan is to first hike up mountains to then make first descents with a board, then this window of time becomes even smaller. All in all, you’re left with about 3 days left for the actual action. The rest of the time you spend traveling, waiting, and eating …
But the moment and the feeling you have standing there up on a mountain looking out over a backdrop of snow, ice, ocean and icebergs ... it’s indescribable! After dropping in for my first Greenland line, I was rewarded with good snow, stable snow cover, and just plain great snowboarding. Turn for turn in virgin Greenland snow. And the whole time the fjord with its towering icebergs in the background.
We came here to experience the peace and quiet that emanate from such a place. And we found what we were looking for. Snowboarding in Greenland is like a trip to the moon. Explore and discover was our mission and it was a success.
